Snyderville Basin Cemetery District

Notice of Proposed Truth and Taxation (Click Here)

Mission Statement

The mission of the Snyderville Basin Cemetery District (District) is to provide one or more public cemeteries to benefit residents of the Snyderville Basin area, and to provide for the improvement, maintenance, and beautification of such cemeteries.

Vision Statement:

The Snyderville Basin Cemetery is a beautiful memorial park that incorporates burial places within the natural environment. It is a peaceful retreat that offers our citizens and guests opportunities for community gatherings, public art, and passive recreation, while serving as a place of respectful visitation to honor and memorialize the citizens that lived here and helped make our community great!

Background

In 2012, the Summit County Council (Council) approved the creation of the District in response to the need for a cemetery in the Snyderville Basin; Park City Cemetery is not available to folks living outside Park City limits and there are no cemetery or mortuary services presently being provided in the Basin. In 2023, the Council appointed a five-member Board of Directors (Board) for the District. In September 2023, the Board had its initial meeting, and has met at least monthly since then to determine how to accomplish the goals established for the District by the Council..

Board of Directors

●   Max Greenhalgh, Chair
●   Daniel Whitehurst, Vice Chair
●    Will Seggos, Treasurer
●   Bill Oshinsky, Clerk
●   Pete Gillwald

Community Engagement

The Board is currently in the early stages of identifying potential sites for the cemetery and learning more from the public about their desires and preferences for cemetery amenities and offerings. To that end, the Board has issued the following survey for members of the public to provide early input into its planning efforts. All Snyderville Basin residents are encouraged to submit a survey to help guide the Board’s activities related to establishing a new cemetery.

January 2026 - New Preferred Cemetery Site

Soon after the creation of the Cemetery District, the board of trustees commenced a search for a cemetery site.  Our preference was to find a county owned property to save county taxpayers the cost of purchasing a site.  We eventually selected a site in what is known as the Utah Olympic park.  The site was along the northern side of Olympic Parkway about half a mile from the roundabout.  We received considerable push-back from stakeholders who expressed (1) concern that the cemetery would likely interfere with existing recreational activities on the site and (2) a perception that having a cemetery alongside the roadway leading to the Olympic venues could be a psychological distraction to the athletes and guests. Based on these issues, we removed the site from consideration.

After an exhaustive search, we have selected a new preferred cemetery site at UOP that we feel is less controversial yet still well-suited for our needs.  The site is situated between Highway 224 and a proposed county road that will run along the east side of Run-amok.  The site is bounded on the north by Olympic Boulevard and on the south by Cub Run--the entrance to Bear Hollow.  The cemetery entrance will be from Cub Run.  From test pits dug this past Summer, it appears the site is geologically adequate for a cemetery.

We are in the throes of seeking approval to obtain the site for a cemetery from the Summit County Council and Manager.  We are also seeking feedback from stakeholders and local government agencies.

Below is the proposed layout prepared by board member Pete Gillwald, who is a prominent landscape architect in the area.  As we continue working with stakeholder entities, we welcome input from the public at large. We are pleased to answer any questions and consider any concerns you may have.  Feel free to leave comments here or contact district board chair, Max Greenhalgh, at max.greensbcd@gmail.com.
