Did you know? By following curbside recycling guidelines, you could help save the county roughly $133,120 worth of airspace at Summit County landfills each year.
More Curbside Recycling Tips:
> CANS: Cans and Curbside go well together, if it’s metal and food came in it, then put it in the bin! But be sure to clean out the can with a spoon first. That’s right: all cans should be spoon cleaned! Specifically:
- Aluminum Cans
- Aluminum Trays
- Steel Cans
- Metal bottle caps
- Tin
> CARTONS: Aseptic Packaging IS accepted in the curbside bin and can be recognized by 2 types: shelf-stable and refrigerated. Please empty and rinse the container before setting into the curbside recycling bin.
Shelf-stable cartons (found on shelves in grocery stores) contain:
- Soups
- Almond or Coconut Milk
- Juices
- Broth
- Wine (not to be confused with a box of wine that includes a NON RECYCLABLE plastic bag)
Refrigerated cartons (found in the chilled section of the grocery store) include:
- Milk
- Juice
- Cream
- Egg Substitutes
Fun Fact: These types of cartons are also called Gable Top Containers.
> PAPER FIBER: Many types of paper and cardboard can be placed in your curbside bin. All containers must be empty and preferably broken down to reduce space.
Allowed in Curbside:
- Newspaper (including inserts). Remove any NON-RECYCLABLE plastic sleeves.
- Cardboard. No waxed cardboard or produce boxes made to repel moisture.
- Kraft Bags (typically known as brown paper grocery/liquor store bags).
- Magazines, Catalogs, & Telephone Books. Remove any NON-RECYCLABLE plastic sleeves.
- Junk Mail & Envelopes. Remove plastic credit cards first.
- Office & Computer Paper. Remove any metal clips. Staples are ok.
- Shredded Paper. Only if it is bagged in a plastic bag, preferably clear. This is THE ONLY TIME plastic bags are allowed.
- Notebooks. Remove the metal spiral first.
- Gift Wrap. Remove any ribbons and bows first.
- Paperback and Hardcover Books.
- Chipboard (typically known as cereal, cake & food, or gift boxes).
- Carrier Stock (typically known as soda or beer can carrying cases).
- Egg Cartons (made of fiber, not Styrofoam).
Did you know? Food waste takes up nearly 50% of the air space at the Summit County landfill, which is both costly and environmentally harmful.
As part of the County’s commitment to responsible waste management and sustainability, we’ve teamed up with the Park City Community Foundation to expand participation in the Zero Food Waste initiative, which aims to eliminate food waste from the local landfill by 2030.
As part of the new incentive program, new residential customers in Summit County will receive FREE weekly curbside food waste collection from Momentum Recycling through the end of 2025.
Existing customers can also benefit, receiving two months of free service for every successful referral to the program.

Glass should never go into your curbside bin! Thankfully, there are several options for glass recycling offered in Summit County.
Momentum Glass Recycling: Momentum Recycling collects your glass monthly, for a cost of $12 p/m. There is no sorting required and no need to rinse with water or remove labels. All colors of glass are accepted.
Recycle Utah: many different spectrums of colored glass can be recycled at Recycle Utah and at collection sites around the county:

*Fees apply to most electronics ($5-$25). E-waste taken to Recycle Utah is recycled with a Utah-based, E-Steward certified company that dismantles electronics to recover recyclable materials and dispose of hazardous materials such as lead, mercury, and cadmium.
Best Buy
The Best Buy in Kimball Junction Park City accepts household electronic waste as well for free or a small charge.
Prescription and over-the-counter drugs should never be flushed, rinsed down the sink, or simply thrown in the trash. The chemicals in medications can contaminate our drinking water and disrupt aquatic life. Old, out-of-date and unusable prescription medicines can be dropped off at the following locations:

Compact Fluorescent (CFL) Light Bulbs have small amounts of mercury in them and should NOT go into curbside recycling bins or trash cans.
All County Landfills and Recycle Utah accept CFL Light Bulbs. Look for a cardboard box inside the Recycle Utah office labeled CFLs. Recycle Utah takes bulbs to the household hazardous waste facility at the Summit County landfill.
Traditional light bulbs can be put in your home trash cans.
No plastic bags of any kind go into the curbside bib. This also includes any plastic bag you may use in your home to collect recyclables. Dump the recyclables in the bin, not the plastic bag.
When you have a collection of plastic bags of any kind (from the grocery store or the bag that wraps the newspaper) you can drop them at the following locations:

In addition, no plastic wrap of any kind or styrofoam (#6 plastic) can go in the curbside bin. This also includes plastic film like plastic sheets and plastic tarps.
